In fact, I think that my instagram name should be changed to EliseEatingFood, because I almost solely post pictures of the beautiful meals I enjoy. Even though I qualify as somewhat of a picky eater, I simply love food. Latin cuisine has been and will always be my favorite. With many of friends from South American countries, I have had my fair share of torta tres leches, empanadas, flan, arepas, rice and beans, and I will never turn down a taco or burrito meal, especially when there is a generous amount of guacamole on top.
Food is our common ground, a universal experience. - James BeardToday I had the best latin meal to date, at a cuban inspired restaurant named The Dining Room located in historic Jonesborough, Tennessee. With a menu ranging from salads and grilled cheese to fried plantains and meats with chimichurri sauce, every meal seemed like a good choice even for those who are pickier than I am. For an appetizer we tried two types of fried plantains; one sweet and the other spicy. I personally preferred the spicy plantains which were flattened before being fried and finished with a spicy garlic topping. My entrée was the chicken topi chop, a flavorful chicken dish over rice and beans topped with salsa, chimichurri sauce, and cilantro. I am not exaggerating when I say that the chicken was the tastiest I’ve ever had. It was an explosion of seasoning without being spicy, a task that I can only imagine as being extremely difficult. One of the best parts was the freshness of the salsa and chimichurri sauce, particularly as I enjoyed it with the rice and beans. Last, but definitely not least, was dessert. I was full after my delectable entrée, but it is impossible for me to resist torta tres leches. This dessert translates to three milks cake due to the fact that it includes three kinds of milk: condensed milk, evaporated milk and heavy cream. The best part about this dessert is that it is extremely light and does not make you feel like exploding after one bite. It was the perfect end to a savory meal.
