About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Unfortunately breast cancer affects all our lives. As everybody should know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and breast cancer awareness is Zeta Tau Alpha’s philanthropy!
Throughout October, Zetas partner with the National Football League to distribute pink awareness ribbons at NFL stadiums across the country, and with Susan G. Komen® to sponsor the Survivor Program at Races for the Cure®.
I just spent this whole morning with other Zetas at the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey, helping to hand out 60,000 pink breast cancer awareness ribbons to Jets and Broncos viewers and fans. It was wonderful to see fans already adorned with pink pins noting that they were survivors or simply wearing some pink Jets paraphernalia supporting the cause. But the best sight was toward the end of our time handing out ribbons, almost every single person who walked by was wearing a pink ZTA “think pink” ribbon! It was also great to see young kids wanting the ribbons and even better to see the young boys take the ribbons even though they were bright pink! My friend Nicole and I were lucky enough to pin ribbons on past Jets players Erik Coleman and Tony Richardson! (Erik Coleman told us that he would be wearing the ribbon on TV tonight, so keep an eye out for that!)
It can be difficult to hand out ribbons to New Jersey and New York fans who are more prone to ignoring people on the streets asking questions. However, most fans were excited to be given ribbons, especially when they heard they were free! Many fans even gave donations that will go to the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation. We received almost $1400 worth of donations!
If you would like to donate toward the cause, NYU ZTA is putting on a male beauty pageant for the fraternities at NYU, and all proceeds will go toward breast cancer awareness education. Click on the link here.
